What If There Were ...

The Legacy project began with a novel.  But the story quickly grew beyond its pages to flourish in real life.

  • a major city, transformed to Sustainability, in the midst of the 5th largest economy in the world

Legacy: A Story of Hope imagines a small group of friends who set out to make a difference in environmental issues around them.  Over forty years (from 2002-2040), these friends work to transform the city of Los Angeles.  Only the characters are fiction.  The innovations they use are real environmental solutions recommended by experts worldwide.  In short, the sweeping Transformation described in Legacy is already underway.

  • a passionate circle of environmentalists working together, restoring every facet of life

Soon after Legacy was released in 2005, a group of neighbors in Los Angeles decided to form a circle like the one in the story.  That circle, the Environmental Change-Makers, has grown and become a presence in the Los Angeles environmental scene.  With 100-mile potlucks, Edible Landscaping Garden Tours, Solar Cooker craft events, Earth Care Fairs, Bike Rides, and more, they combine fun and community with environmental progress.

  • a (wo)man who thought in terms of generations rather than years

Legacy author Joanne Poyourow is the co-founder and program director of the Environmental Change-Makers.  She continues to write material for the Change-Makers activities, and frequently gives presentations at Southern California venues.

  • a place for you, to become a part of the story

The meetings of the Environmental Change-Makers focus on solutions: "What We Can Do" about our environmental issues.  Many of the handouts and resources used at these meetings are available online.

And now, the Environmental Change-Makers are about to release their own book.  Environmental Change-Making shows you How To Cultivate Lasting Change in Your Community.  Through these resources you can become part of the solution.
